We spend many hours a day in bed, so our spines must be correctly supported in the right position, especially if we have trouble with back and neck pain.

Whereas traditional mattresses force your body to adapt to them, memory foam mattresses react to the shape and position of your body. Body heat and pressure contour the mattress so that it supports your back and neck in a natural alignment without compressing the spine.

Traditional mattresses rely on coiled springs and padding to support your body. The springs provide the same level of pressure across the whole mattress. They don't conform to the shape of your body or your position, which can lead to uneven support and discomfort.

Memory foam mattresses, in contrast, are made of a polyurethane matrix with millions of tiny air pockets. They adapt to the shape of your body and distribute weight evenly across their surface, which helps to relieve back and neck pain by ensuring that each part of your body gets the support it needs.

Early memory foam mattresses could retain heat at the surface near to your body, resulting in a hot and uncomfortable night's sleep. Modern memory foam mattresses use gel particles within the matrix to absorb excess heat and radiate it away from the body, making for a cool and restful night.

Memory foam mattresses conform to the shape of your body and your position, distributing pressure more evenly. You will sink into the memory foam as it molds to the shape of your body, but memory foam mattresses do not engulf you so much as to be uncomfortable or to restrict movement.

Mattress toppers can bring some comfort to your current mattress, but they are not a substitute for a high-quality memory foam mattress. Toppers add a thin layer of foam compared to the 7-inches of memory foam in our SleepLab Bed Plush Mattress.

A topper won't return a sagging mattress to its original firmness, and it won't be as comfortable, low-maintenance, or helpful to people suffering from back and neck pain. Additionally, because toppers aren't integrated, they can move relative to the mattress during the night, reducing comfort and support.

Our SleepLab Bed Plush Mattress support patients that weigh up to 500 lbs. and will not be damaged by heavier sleepers, although care should be taken to use your memory foam mattress on a bed with a suitable weight capacity.

Memory foam mattresses are more durable and longer-lasting than traditional mattresses. They do not wear out or sag in the same way as spring mattresses. You can expect high-quality memory foam mattresses to last ten years or more. Because memory foam shapes itself to the contours of your body, it is an excellent choice for people who sleep on their side or front.
